Awesome Belle cruises to victory at Calder
Jacks or Better Farms, Inc. homebred filly Awesome Belle led at every call to take the $75,000 Crystal Rail S. [VIDEO] at Calder on Saturday. The daughter of Awesome of Course is now a three-time stakes winner, with additional black-type victories in last year’s $300,000 My Dear Girl S. and the Three Ring S. this year.
With just 19 runners this year, Awesome of Course's offspring have accounted for seven stakes winners this year, tied for the top spot among all Florida sires.
Awesome Belle never faced any real threat as the pacesetter, guiding the field of 3-year-old fillies through moderate early fractions of :24.87 and :48.54. Challenged briefly on the turn by Montessa G, the chestnut Florida bred quickly opened up a 1 ½-length lead at the top of the stretch and increased that margin to 2 ¼ lengths at the wire. She ran the 7 ½-furlongs over a turf course listed as good in 1:30.53.
“When I looked at the race, I thought there were a few other horses in there that had speed, so I was a little surprised they let me go like they did,” Jara said afterward. “And when she broke good, I knew I had to go for it.”
“I tried to slow her down as best I could, and no one came to us,” the rider added. “In some of her past races she would get a little rank on me, but today she was always calm and relaxed. I was pleased the whole way with her; she was doing everything so well.”
Trained by Stanley Gold, Awesome Belle increased her career earnings to $353,387. The filly is out of the top-class producer Bayou Plans, whose foals include Midas Eyes, winner of the Grade 1 Forego S.; Bayou's Lassie, winner of a trio of Grade 3 events; and the stakes winner Bourbon N Blues. Bayou Plans was a four-time stakes winner herself, racking up $308,959 in earnings.
