Awesome Belle wins stakes thriller at Calder

Awesome Belle beat Canadian Mistress by a nose in the $55,000 Mairzy Doates S. May 4 at Calder to give the 4-year-old daughter of Awesome of Course her sixth career stakes win.

The Jacks or Better Farm homebred had to dig deep to get the win in Saturday's feature, coming three wide into the stretch to collar the front-runner at the eighth pole. The duo battled to the wire with Awesome Belle getting the better of her foe.

Awesome Belle was ridden by Fernando Jara and won the 1 1/16 mile contest in 1:46.93. The race was scheduled for turf but was moved to the main track after a few days of rain.

Stanley Gold trains Awesome Belle, who has $480,637 in her career. The filly, out of Bayou Plans, is a half-sister to Grade 1 Forego S. winner Midas Eyes and multiple Grade 3 winner Bayou's Lassie.

Awesome of Course, who stands this year at Journeyman Stud for $7,500, is also represented this year by Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship (G3) winner Fort Loudon, making him Florida's only sire this year with a U.S. graded stakes winner.
