Track announcer Tom Durkin called Awesome Feather's performance “perfect” as the 3-year-old filly crossed the wire in the Grade 1 Gazelle S. to run her record to a flawless 8-for-8. The daughter of Awesome of Course was the 2010 champion 2-year-old filly, capping her juvenile campaign with a brilliant win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Awesome of Course, Florida's leading juvenile sire in 2010 and 2011, will stand the 2012 season at Journeyman Stud for $5,000.

Awesome Feather broke alertly going into the first turn, and was pulling hard going to the backstretch. Jockey Jeffrey Sanchez got his mount to settle into stride soonafter, and his filly waited for the cue to move. The time came at the head of the stretch, and Awesome Feather responded with zeal, pulling away easily. She ultimately won the 1 1/8 mile contest by 5 1/4-lengths with an explosive final furlong  to complete the nine furlongs in 1:50.01.

“She is little, but she is unbelievable,” said Sanchez. “I didn’t go to the lead, I sat there, took back. At the half-mile pole, I knew I was going to win the race. I had a lot of confidence in her.”

Awesome Feather has now earned $1,681,746 in her career, the bulk of it for Fred Brei's Jacks or Better Farm, her breeder who campaigned her throughout 2010. Shortly after the Breeders' Cup, Awesome Feather was sold at the Keeneland November auction for $2.3 million to Frank Stronach's Adena Springs, who turned her over to trainer Chad Brown.

“She’s got the heart of a champion,” Brown said after the Gazelle. “We just try to stay out of her way in the morning training her and just try to take care of her, day-to-day. She does the rest every day. It was a pretty special win. As long as she’s 100 percent healthy, we’ll probably see her in the Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream. That’d be the plan, but we’re going to see how she is first, but if she’s OK, that’s where I’d go.”

Awesome Feather is out of the top-class mare Precious Feather, winner of four stakes and over a quarter-million dollars. She has produced four foals, all winners, in addition to Awesome Feather.
