Bwana Charlie received his second 2-year-old winner in four starters from his debut crop when Bwana Express became a first-out winner in a $27,000 maiden special weight heat at Calder Race Course on May 11th. The win moved Bwana Charlie into second behind Wildcat Heir on the Leading Freshman Sires list, giving Journeyman the hottest two first-crop sires in the land.

Bwana Express broke sharp and out-dueled a field of seven in the two-furlong dash, stopping the clock in 22.60 seconds over a fast track. Out of the Pentelicus mare Penny Express, the chestnut filly was bred in Florida by Carl and Martha Johnson.

Trained by Braulio Lopez, Jr., Bwana Express earned $18,200 for owners Ernesto and Manual Sarmiento, moving Bwana Charlie’s progeny earnings to $45,677.
