Cedar Key Sunset overcame a rough start to break his maiden at Hawthorne on Dec. 8, giving his sire Saint Anddan his 15th winner from his first crop, tops among all Florida freshman sires and seventh best  on the North American list.

Cedar Key Sunset was jostled around some at the start of the 1 1/16 mile contest, but still managed to make his way into the second spot going into the first turn. The gray colt tracked the leader until the head of the stretch, when he took over and held off his challengers to win by three parts of a length.

The winner, bred in Florida by Phil and Karen Matthews, is owned by Larry Elenz and Janice Krueger.
