Undefeated champion Awesome Feather will put her perfect 10-for-10 record on the line when the 4-year-old Awesome of Course filly goes postward in Friday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
The 2010 2-year-old filly champion, Awesome Feather capped off that campaign off with a win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Frank Stronach's Adena Springs operation purchased Awesome Feather for $2.3 million at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton November Sale days after her Breeders' Cup win. She missed most of 2011, but came back that autumn with easy wins in the Le Slew S. and Grade 1 Gazelle S. She never looked better than in her most recent start, and 11 1/4-length romp in the $83,000 Nasty Storm S. at Belmont Park, when she earned a 108 Beyer Speed Figure, one of the highest filly figures of 2012.
Though she has had two different trainers, Stanley Gold and now Chad Brown, she has only had one rider in her career: Jeffrey Sanchez, who will of course get the leg up on Friday evening.
"She has a lot of natural speed and she can carry it as far as you want," Brown said. "She has a tremendous determination to win, to pass a horse. If she sees anyone in front of her she just can't wait to go right by them. Luckily so far she's gone by them all."
Awesome Feather shipped to California from New York Monday ahead of Hurricane Sandy. Brown said she shipped well and jogged on the track at Santa Anita on Tuesday morning.
