A bay colt by Journeyman stallion Circular Quay topped the first session of the OBS June Sale, bringing a winning bid of $275,000.
Cataloged as hip No. 266 and consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, the Florida-bred named Cheers of Thunder went agent Jerry McClenin, bidding on behalf of Paul Pompa, Jr. The colt worked three-eighths in :33 1/5 in his under-the-tack work, which was the fastest of the day at that distance.
"The horse is doing really good. We liked the breeze,” said McClenin. “It looks like the work didn't take anything out of him. We went a little higher than expected, but he looks like a ready-made horse. He'll go to Saratoga."
Bred by Quarter Pole Enterprises, Cheers of Thunder was purchased by Dewey Price and Blue River for $12,000 as a yearling at OBS last August out of the TDM Sales consignment.
Circular Quay, Florida's leading freshman sire last year, sits atop the Sunshine State's second-crop list this year, with 12 winners to date. This past weekend, his 3-year-old colt Reporting Star was a close second to the top-rated Verrazano in the Grade 3 Pegasus S. at Monmouth Park.
