Derivativecontract won a heated stretch battle to emerge victorious in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight affair for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 20.
The Florida-bred son of Cowtown Cat was making his second lifetime start in Thursday's main track contest and had to go four wide coming into the stretch to make his run for the lead. The dark bay colt dueled with Pomeroy's Package before edging away in the final sixteenth to win by a neck in 1:03.34, just a second off the track record and earning a very solid Beyer Speed Figure of 83.
Derivativecontract was bred by Leslie Bailey and Philip Murrah out of the winning Mr. Greeley mare Infinitely Greedy, who is a full sister to three-time stakes winner Lovewithoutend.
Cowtown Cat now has six winners in 2014 and is among Florida's leading Third-crop sires. He finished 2013 as one of only three Florida Second-crop sires with over $1 million in progeny earnings.
