Dual Derby-winning 3-year-old Deputy Glitters has retired from racing and will stand his first season in 2009 at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud.

Deputy Glitters was a leading 3-year-old from an epic 2006 crop that included such names as Barbaro, Bernardini, Henny Hughes and Bluegrass Cat. Racing in the colors of the Joseph LaCombe Stable, Deputy Glitters soundly defeated Grade 1 winner Bluegrass Cat in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) in Oldsmar, FL, and went on to collect another strong Derby victory in the Ohio Derby (G2). In that race, Deputy Glitters defeated Grade 1 winner Flashy Bull and graded-stakes winner High Cotton, recording a 105 Beyer Speed Figure for the performance.

“Deputy Glitters was an excellent 3-year-old who possessed the ability to win top races running around two turns,” said Brent Fernung, co-owner of Journeyman Stud. “He’ll add stamina and class to the pedigrees of the mares he breeds. He is the product of a successful racing stable and we appreciate Joe LaCombe giving us this opportunity.”

Deputy Glitters was also a precocious juvenile. He broke his maiden at first asking at Saratoga by 13 ¾ lengths and earned a 92 Beyer in the six-furlong race.

By Deputy Commander out of the Glitterman mare Glitters, Deputy Glitters retires with earnings of $426,695.

A fee will be determined at a later date.
