Wildcat Heir topped a red-hot week and emerged as the #1 Sire in Florida, after Derwin's Star won the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks on Sept. 18th. The new stakes winner was the ninth winner in five days for Wildcat Heir, who is also the nation's second- ranked sophomore sire, with $3.1 million in progeny earnings. His 67 winners on the year is 11 more than his nearest second-crop competitor.
Derwin's Star, a 3-year-old filly, got her first stakes victory in the seven furlong Charles Town Oaks. The well-traveled filly has started at seven different tracks, including a third place finish in the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks this past July.
At Charles Town, the Steve Klesaris trainee showed her professionalism from the start. She settled about four lengths off the lead in mid-pack after a quarter-mile. She went three wide around the final turn to take over the top spot, opening up by several lengths in a few strides. The final margin of victory was a comfortable 4 3/4-lengths in a final time of 1:24.64. Her 101 Beyer Speed Figure was the first triple-digit number in her career.
Owned by Puglisi Racing and her trainer, Derwin's Star is now 5-1-1 in 11 starts, with $372,570 in earnings. She was bred in Florida by Woodsfield Farm.
To go with his nine winners for the week, Wildcat Heir now has nine black-type performers in 2010. Derwin's Star, with the big payday from the Charles Town Oaks, is his top earner on the year.
