The best Florida-bred thoroughbreds of 2009 were honored Mar. 15 during the 50th annual awards ceremony sponsored by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association (FTBOA).

The leading freshman sire was Journeyman Stud's stallion Wildcat Heir. The stallion set a North American record for most juvenile wins, with 39 for the year. His progeny earned more than $1.16 million in purses. He was the only Florida freshman sire to top the $1M mark.

He was led by a pair of stakes winners in Wild Mia, who scored in the John Franks Juvenile Fillies Turf S., and Karmageddon, winner of the New Jersey Juvenile S. His stakes run has continued this year, with Richiegirlgonewild and Dances With Ashley already taking added money in 2010.
