Indy Wind, a five-time stakes winner by leading sire A.P. Indy, has retired from racing and will join the stallion ranks at Brent & Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Ocala, FL for the 2009 breeding season, it was announced Friday.
Based primarily out of New Jersey, Indy Wind has been one of the top older horses in training around Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands the last couple of years, compiling eight wins and running on the board in 13 of 22 starts including multiple graded stakes placings. The 6-year-old chestnut won back-to-back renewals of the Alysheba S. in 2006-07 at the Meadowlands, as well as consecutive runnings of the Frisk Me Now S. at Monmouth in 2007-08.
In his latest win in the Frisk Me Now this past June, Indy Wind soundly defeated multiple graded stakes winners Buffalo Man and Judith’s Wild Rush en route to a 7 ½-length victory. He stopped the clock in 1:39.52, just three-fourths of a second off the track record for one mile and seventy yards, earning a 110 Beyer Speed Figure. He also won the Skip Away S. at the Jersey Shore.
Indy Wind began his career winning three of his first four starts. He broke his maiden first time out while sprinting six furlongs, rallying from more than a dozen lengths back in last place early on to finish first in the 11-horse field. He quickly followed that up with a 10-length win in an entry-level allowance race, earning a 102 Beyer, and won a second-level allowance race in his fourth start with a 100 Beyer.
Indy Wind, who retires with earnings of $392,900, is a regally bred son of A.P. Indy, hailing from the Kingmambo mare Zagora. His introductory fee will be $2,500.
“The fast sons of A.P. Indy are the ones that make good sires,” said Brent Fernung. “Indy Wind is a fast son of A.P. Indy, and at the price he’s standing for people ought to love him.”
