Crystal and Brent Fernung’s Journeyman Bloodstock had the day’s sales toppers in the consignor preferred session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2008 Winter Mixed Sale.

The top-selling yearling was a Posse colt, hip number 151. Out of the Native Prospector mare Navarro Rose, the colt was bought for $95,000 by Josham Farms Limited, Agent.

“He’s a big stout colt,” said Brent Fernung of Journeyman Stud. “He’s been down here about six weeks and he’s done a good job of getting himself muscled up. He’s turned into a real nice horse. He was on everybody’s list, and at the end it came to three or four players in the 90s. I was pleasantly surprised, but not shocked.”

The top-selling broodmare, Kabeeb, sold for $90,000 and was bought by Adena Springs with the ticket being signed for by Dan Hall, manager of Adena’s Kentucky operation.

“She matches well to some of our stallions,” Hall said. “We bought her to support our stallions.”

The 8-year-old mare, who sold as hip number 112, is by Labeeb (GB) out of the Carson City mare Kalene. A stakes winner in Canada, she sold in foal to Bandini. Her first foal, a 2007 filly by former Florida sire Yes It’s True, also sold Wednesday as hip number 111 for $52,000 (the ninth-highest price of the day). Hall said they have not decided which stallion Kabeeb will be bred to or if she will go to Kentucky or remain in Florida.

“I thought that she sold real well,” Fernung said. “We sold her yearling right in front of her. She had a reasonable amount of looks, but it’s difficult with broodmares to know what they are going to bring because no one comes back and looks at them two or three times. She is the kind of mare Adena Springs likes. She’s a good hard-knocking race mare with a Canadian race record. I started suspecting they would be the buyer. Honestly, her reserve was way below what she brought, so we were really excited about her.”

But Journeyman wasn’t done yet. They also had the third-highest priced horse in the sale.

A Malibu Moon colt, hip number 99, sold for $75,000. Out of the Temperance Hill mare Jamie’s Sunshine, the colt was bought by Pick Six Thoroughbreds.

“That was a beautiful colt. I had him pegged to bring $75,000, but I thought he could do more. He’s the type of horse that just gets better. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a whole bunch of money on him,” Fernung said.
