Mass Media's 3-year-old son Manicero made the first start of his career on the grass in the $75,000 Needles S. Sept. 17 at Calder, rolling home late to win the 1 1/16 mile contest by a measured half length with a well-timed ride by J.C. Leyva.
Sitting in the fifth spot early on Manicero began to edge closer on the final turn, came three wide into the stretch to gain the lead at the sixteenth pole, and then held off the late-closing Star of Sarava to finish in 1:43.15 on the firm turf.
Trained by Leo Azpurua, Jr. for his father Leo, Sr., Manicero was bred in Florida by Roberto Sanson. The dark bay is now 8-0-0 in 11 starts, earning $369,008. The dark bay colt has won seven stakes in his career, including a seven furlong track record performance at Tampa Bay Downs in April.
“He had to run hard but he answered another question today,” said Azpurua Jr., referring to Manicero’s turf debut. “He’s done everything we’ve asked of him and we’ve tried to bring him along step by step.”
Mass Media is Florida's fourth-ranked second-crop sire of 2011,with over $930,000 in progeny earnings. Manicero is his leading earner and has accounted for four of his sire's seven stakes wins thus far this year.
