Horses by Wildcat Heir, Mass Media, and Hear No Evil all added black type to their resume on Nov. 13, highlighted by Breathoffreshair's victory in the $70,000 Jersey Juvenile at Monmouth Park.
Trained by Ben Perkins Jr., Breathoffreshheir, by Wildcat Heir, covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:11.19 as the favorite in the field of six 2-yea-old fillies.
Wildcat Heir is Florida's leading sire of 2010, with seven stakes winners and nearly $4 million in earnings.
“I had a great tip,” said winning jockey C. H. Marquez Jr. “Ben (trainer Perkins) told me to try to go to the front, and we left running. When I called upon her, she switched and I had something in reserve. Ben decided to put blinkers on after her last race, and I think it made all the difference.”
Saturday’s win marked the second in three starts for Breathoffreshheir, who came into the race after a runner-up effort on Oct. 3. In her debut, the homebred out of the Appealing Skier mare Uphill Skier was an easy winner on Aug. 29. Breathoffreshheir has now banked $95,730 for owner/breeder New Farm.
In separate races at Calder on Saturday, Beso Grande, by Mass Media, was second in the Joe O'Farrell S., while Hear Ye Hear Ye, by Hear No Evil, was second in the Jack Dudley Sprint S.
Beso Grande, a 2-year-old filly, was a good second in the $125,000 O'Farrell, coming from sixth in the seven furlong dash to capture the runner-up spot. The Florida-bred filly has hit the board in all six of her starts, earning $109,492. She was previously third in both the My Dear Girl and Lindsay Frolic stakes.
First year sire Mass Media has five stakes horses, including Manicero, who was a dominating winner in the Jack Price Juvenile S. on the Nov. 13 Calder card. Mass Media is Florida's fourth leading freshman sire.
Hear Ye Hear Ye was a clear second in the $125,000 Dudley. The six furlong sprint was for horses three years old and upward. Hear Ye Hear Ye, a gray/roan 3-year-old, got a somewhat wide trip in the Dudley, but was game throughout to be two lengths clear of the third-place horse.
Owned by Jacks of Better Stable, Hear Ye Hear Ye has earned $174,337 in his career. He won the Jack Price S. at Calder in 2009.
