Fort Loudon edges Trinniberg in G3 Carry Back

Fort Loudon, by Awesome of Course, and Trinniberg, by Teuflesberg, staged a thrilling duel in the $150,000 Carrry Back S. (G3) Saturday [VIDEO] at Calder, with Fort Loudon pulling out the victory by a neck. Trinniberg was 13 3/4-lengths clear of the third place finisher in the six furlong sprint.

Awesome of Course, the sire of undefeated champion filly Awesome Feather, is Florida's second-leading sire of in the stakes wins category. Teuflesberg is Florida's leading second-crop sire, with Trinniberg his leading earner this year.

Trinniberg got the jump on Fort Loudon out of the gate, but Fort Loudon didn't let his rival get an easy lead. The quarter mile went in :22.05, with Trinniberg up by a half-length. After a half-mile, the duo was seven lengths clear of the field, with Trinniberg still holding a slim margin. The pair remained locked together into the stretch as they engaged in their own personal match race. Fort Loudon finally stuck his head in front inside the sixteenth pole. Fort Loudon managed to outlast his foe as both were all out at the wire.

Three-year-old Fort Loudon, who is owned by his breeder, Fred Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm, completed six furlongs in 1:10.57. The win was his third in a row and seventh in 10 starts at Calder.

“That felt good,” said trainer Stanley Gold. “The strategy was to put pressure on (Trinniberg) right from the start, you can’t just give him an easy lead.” (Jockey Fernando) Jara, said Gold, “did it perfect, and it was just a case of whether we were good enough. We hooked him eyeball to eyeball and let the best horse win. Today it was us.”
