Grade 2 stakes-winning sprinter Teuflesberg has settled into his new home at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Ocala, FL, where the 5-year-old son of Johannesburg will stand the 2010 breeding season.
Teuflesberg, whose first foals hit the ground earlier this year, joined the Journeyman roster after standing his first two seasons at Hurricane Hall stud farm near Lexington, KY, which closed its operation after the 2009 season.
“Teuflesberg is the ideal fit for Florida,” said Ben Walden, former general manager of Hurricane Hall. “He was a very good 2-year-old with a tremendous constitution. His speed and class are unquestionable if you look at what he went on to accomplish as a 3-year-old, winning a Grade 2 sprint at Belmont and stretching out around two turns to win the Southwest at Oaklawn.
“I believe in Teuflesberg, and all of the original shareholders are staying in on the horse. After seeing his first crop of babies here in Kentucky it gives you even more confidence in his potential as a sire,” he said.
Teuflesberg made 11 starts across the country as a 2-year-old, and he finished second beaten a neck by Grade 1 winner Scat Daddy in the Sanford S. (G2) at Saratoga as a maiden. He went on to break his maiden at Keeneland and captured an allowance race at Churchill in 1:09 and change for six furlongs, before concluding his juvenile campaign by winning the Sugar Bowl S. at Fair Grounds.
He made 10 starts at three, including earning his way onto the Triple Crown trail with a win in the one-mile Southwest S. – a race where Teuflesberg stretched his speed around two turns and defeated Grade 1 winner Hard Spun. Teuflesberg would go on to capture his biggest career win in the Woody Stephens S. (G2) on Belmont Stakes day, running seven furlongs in 1:21.49. He closed out his racing career with wins at five premier racetracks, including winning on both dirt and Polytrack, and earnings of $621,981.
“Teuflesberg has the speed and pedigree to do great things for our breeders,” said Brent Fernung. “We appreciate the opportunity that Ben Walden and the other syndicate members have given us, and we look forward to standing Teuflesberg.”
A fee will be announced at a later date.
