Journeyman stallion Wildcat Heir has risen to the top of the North American second-crop sire list, ranking above many more heralded rivals based in Kentucky. Indeed, Wildcat Heir is the only sire in the Top 10 currently not standing in the Bluegrass state.
Wildcat Heir tops the list both in terms of winners (22) and earnings ($763,132). He has a pair of stakes winning fillies so far this year: Richiegirlgonewild, who took Gulfstream Park's $100,000 Old Hat S. (G3) in early January, and Dances with Ashley, winner of both the OBS Sprint S. and the Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies S. at Tampa Bay Downs.
His colts have produced in 2010 as well. Wildcat Frankie was second in the $100,000 Spectacular Bid S., and Black Diamond Cat ran third in the Pasco S. at Tampa.
Wildcat Heir's prominence this year should come as no surprise. He finished 2009 ranked fourth on the North American first-crop sire list, with progeny earnings of $1,169,439. His 39 winners for the year were a record and ten more than his nearest competitor.
